Chapter Twenty

“That was insane!” Reece yelled over the hum of the plane.

Gabe appeared in the doorway of the plane, waving rapidly. I was still in Ryker’s arms as he nodded to Gabe in greeting. Reece ascended the stairs, then Micah. Ryker set me down, and I was about to board the plane when a thought struck me, making my stomach plummet.

“What is it?”

“I left the book in the van. How could I be so dumb? I can’t believe I left it. We have to get it. We can’t leave without it.”

Gabe noticed my hesitation and descended the stairs. “What’s wrong?”

“I left something in the van. It’s important.”

“I’ll go,” Mindy offered.

“You’re not fast enough. I’ll go. What do you need me to get?” Gabe offered.

“There’s a satchel with a book and something else from Dad.”

His eyes flashed at the mention of our dad, then he nodded, and in a flash, he was gone.

“Do you think that was wise?” Ryker asked me.

I sighed. “You think he can’t be trusted because he is a” —I leaned in as if someone might overhear me— “vampire, but he’s part of me, too. He wouldn’t hurt me.”

Ryker ground his jaw and then looked toward the stairs for the plane. “Are we ready to get out of here?”

“I’m ready,” Mindy chimed in, reminding me she was here.

Gabe reappeared with the book and the satchel. “What is this?” he asked, lifting it. “I can read it even though I’ve never seen this language before.” Gabe studied me, looking for answers I didn’t have.

“Dad left it for me. I haven’t had the chance to go through it.”

He studied me, and before he could respond, a bullet sped through the air. I didn’t know what was happening as Gabe dove for me, attempting to shield me. The bullet nicked Ryker’s arm and hit Mindy in the shoulder. She yelped out in pain.

I wanted to go to her, but Gabe was shielding me and pinning me down with a surprising amount of strength.

“Get her on board, now!” Ryker yelled, moving to his sister, who was clutched in pain. Another bullet came flying, and I fought against Gabe to go to Ryker.

“Ah, shit. It got me again!”

Ledger raced down the stairs in wolf form and ran toward the bullets. In the distance, there was a large SUV with men standing around it, holding large guns. A bullet flew toward Ledger. He managed to avoid it, but another came, and he barely missed it.

“Mindy,” I cried out. “Are you okay?”

Ryker pushed Gabe from me, who shook his head and yelled, “Stop!”

A red laser light was aimed right at Ryker’s heart. My man survived a lot, but could he survive a bullet to the heart? Ledger yelped in pain as he was hit.

“Ledger!” Mindy yelled at the same time I yelled, “Ryker!”

“Fuck!” Ryker yelled because there was a red light on me.

A man screamed, and then, in the distance, Ledger yelped. Grey was at the doorway in wolf form, and I heard Ryker in my head, ordering him to stay.
